McNeil To Dexter: Response On MS Trial Not Good Enough
(Halifax, NS) Liberal leader Stephen McNeil says Premier Darrell Dexter’s refusal to fund or support a clinical trial on MS Liberation treatment shows his lack of leadership. Yesterday, Dexter and the NDP government flatly refused to move ahead on its own. "Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Newfoundland are now committed to carrying out their own trials on MS Liberation treatment," said McNeil. "Nova Scotians with MS deserve to know whether the treatment is effective and safe. The only way to do that is through a proper clinical trial."
Dozens of Nova Scotians have left the country for the treatment. Many are returning with anecdotal stories of improvement in their health. However, their progress is not being tracked in an organized way by the province.
"The only way to answer the question of whether this treatment already being sought by Nova Scotia has merit is through a proper clinical trial," said McNeil. "That requires multiple institutions doing the research and at least 1,000 participants. We need to be part of the solution."
Nova Scotia has one of the highest rates of MS per capita in the country, with more than three thousand people living with the disease.
"These people need action now. It's just the right thing to do."
